Did you recently injure your leg or foot and now need to use crutches? We put together our top picks list of crutch alternatives.

Finding the best alternatives to crutches.

If you recently had surgery or injured your leg, foot or ankle it’s likely you will have an issue with limited mobility. As a result of this limited mobility, your Dr. may require you to not put weight on your injury as it recovers and crutches will most likely be your primary means to get around. If this is your case or will soon be a scenario for you, read through this post to discover some crutches alternatives you may be able to take advantage of.

Do I have to use crutches?

We’re not doctors or healthcare experts so, if you’ve been instructed to use crutches please follow your doctors orders. In our research, we have found that using a knee scooter prior to your first post operative appointment is strongly discouraged and sometimes prohibited in some situations.

Is there an alternative faster than crutches?

Depending on your injury, a knee scooter or sometimes called a knee walker, can be used as an alternative to crutches. There is also a thing called a hands free knee crutch. Which is basically a short crutch with a knee rest to hold your leg in a bent position and straps to secure it to your leg. There is also a walker accessory called a knee brace sling or knee brace support. These slings attach themselves to a roller walker.

Which crutch alternative is the best?

In our opinion, which is why we promote it, the knee scooter, or knee walker, is one of the best inventions for those with lower leg injuries. It’s a quicker and easier mode of travel than crutches. Crutches often are difficult to adjust to using and can really be a trip hazard in a lot of cases. But a scooter on the other hand is a simple concept to wrap your dexterity mind around. You simple put your knee on the scooter and push off with your other leg just like riding a standard scooter for fun. There are still some safety precautions to consider when using a knee scooter, but overall we think it’s the absolute best alternative to using crutches.

3. The Walker Knee Sling Attachment

Hard to maneuver and unstable.

In our opinion, these knee slings that attach to a walker are the worst alternative to crutches. The sling attaches to a standard roller walker so you can walk with the walker and rest your leg into the sling. Which is very awkward to use. Do you walk with the leg in the sling? If so, How? do you take your leg out of the sling for each step? Yikes! That seems like such a painful hassle. If you already have a walker you may think you could just buy the sling and call it a day. But, if you don't already have a walker you'd have to also purchase a walker in addition to the sling, in which case you've spent enough money you could have just bought the much easier alternative - a Knee Scooter!

Ease of Use: Awkward & Hard.
